Preventative steps for H1N1 - from a doctor from AIIMS

Preventative steps for H1N1 - from a doctor from AIIMS

Most N95 respirators are designed to filter 95% particulates of 0.3µ, while the size of H1N1 virus is about 0.1µ. Hence, dependence on N95 to protect against H1N1 is like protecting against rain with an umbrella made of mosquito net.

Tamiflu does not kill but prevents H1N1 from further proliferation till the virus limits itself in about 1-2 weeks (its natural cycle). H1N1, like other Influenza A viruses, only infects the upper respiratory tract and proliferates (only) there. The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/ throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps - not fully highlighted in most official communications - can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1.  Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2.  "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3.  Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4.  Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.

5.  Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6.  Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

All these are simple ways to prevent, within means of most households, and certainly much less painful than to wait in long queues outside public hospitals.

Michael Schumacher's aborted Formula One return disappoints Me

Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo has spoken of his disappointment that the audacious plan to reintroduce Michael Schumacher to F1 has failed to come off.

Schumacher, a seven-time F1 world champion, had agreed to help out former team Ferrari and step in for Felipe Massa on a temporary basis after the Brazilian suffered head injuries at the Hungarian Grand Prix last month. But the German has now abandoned the comeback after failing to shrug off a neck injury suffered in a motorbike accident in February.

Ferrari have reacted quickly to the news Schumacher will not race at the European Grand Prix by naming test driver Luca Badoer as his replacement.  "I am very unhappy that a problem means that Michael cannot return to racing," Montezemolo said.

"In the past few days, I could appreciate his great efforts and extraordinary motivation which had spread through the team and fans around the world. "No doubt his return would have been good for Formula One and I am sure it would have seen him fighting for wins again," he added. "In the name of Ferrari and all the fans, I wish to thank him for the strong attachment he displayed for the team in these circumstances.

"In agreement with Stefano Domenicali, we have therefore decided to give Luca Badoer the chance to race for the Scuderia after he has put in so many years of hard work as a test driver."
Badoer last raced in Formula One a decade ago. He made 48 starts for Lola, Minardi and Forti Course but failed to register a single point. Eddie Jordan feels Formula One has been "robbed" after Schumacher opted against a return to the sport on medical grounds.

Jordan, the founder and former owner of Jordan Grand Prix, a Formula One constructor which operated from 1991 to 2005, told TalkSport the German's decision is a major setback for F1.

"Lance Armstrong wouldn't compete in the Tour de France if he wasn't 100 per cent fit and Schumacher is exactly the same," said Jordan.

"But I am surprised it has taken this long (for him to make a decision).

"He has the speed but not the ability to go two hours in a race with his neck after the accident.

"Ferrari would have had the best medical people on the case but he is not up to the job. We have been robbed because I wanted to see how he could cope with these young guys."

Jordan questioned why Schumacher had put himself in a position to sustain the neck injury in the first place, adding: "What was he thinking with the bikes, he had rocks in his head."

The Irishman claimed Schumacher's decision to abandon his comeback will be a huge blow to Ferrari although he believes it may accelerate the timeframe for Massa's comeback and could even prompt a move to take Fernando Alonso from Renault.

"Massa has, thank goodness, made a huge recovery and this may give him the impetus to come back earlier and don't be surprised if he returns at Monza (on Sept 13)," said Jordan.

"But this is a huge setback for Ferrari. Schumacher needed to come back to inspire confidence and give them a boost, as the sport needs Ferrari.

"There are a number of drivers who won't get a drive next year and what's to say that Ferrari won't try to do a deal with (Renault managing director) Flavio Briatore as my information is that Alonso is going to Ferrari next year.

"Why don't they bring it forward? If I was Ferrari that is what I would try to do."

Where there is confusion, there is no freedom

We are going to talk about freedom. Free to live where we want, free to do what we want, Free to select girl or boy, free to read anything, even free to not read anyting. We are free for anything, then what we do with that freedom? Based on the freedom that we have got, we do almost all that we want, and thus we move towards being rebellious (maverik).

You have got freedom to all sort, but what you do with that freedom? We believe that we have got options, and we are free for selection. Where do we want to go? Italy or London? I am free to select any of these two, only i need passport and visa.  But does freedom emerges from Selection?  Just think carefully, why do we need to do selection from options? If you are very clear about what you want then there is no options for that, isn't it?

Where there is clearity about this or that, there can never be confusion. Where there is confusion, uncertainity, there only options comes in.What i am saying is f there is no confusion, there is nothing loke selection, nothing like options inside us, that is the actual freedom.

Dr Deepak Purohit wrote to Presidents about Swine Flu (Wearing masks is not MUST )

The only mail I got related to Swine Flu... which is worth reading :)

My dear President,

I agree with you that swine flu awareness is needed, but there is no need to be panicky and join the publicity propaganda carried out by media and others which acts as a vehicle to spread misconception than to spread scientific information.

These are few facts about swine flu when discussed with the leading epidemiologists.

1) Swine flu, that is H1N1 flu is not new, first detected in 1987

2) Infective stage of flue is 5 days, 1 day before and 4 days after onset of symptoms

3) The best way to prevent it spreading is asking patient having symptoms of flu like fever cough and running nose to take rest at home for 4 days so he does not transmit it

4) Masks are of limited value if any, in this disease, it can spread through droplets on your skin, through contact etc, and I have seen that the masks in Pune are worn as fashion statement, while walking on road today morning I saw people wearing masks coming out for a morning walk with their dogs!, many wearing masks around their necks, and so on, infect these masks shall act as the vehicles to carry the virus, instead, avoiding crowded places or cinema halls or malls where air conditioners are on, is advisable, because you get recalculated air, where the virus density multiplies 5)Death after H1N1 flu is not common, infect infections like measles is taking toll of thousands more every year, and we are oblivious of the facts. Swine flu is being blown out of proportion by media trying to create hysteria among lay people.

6) Fever accompanied by respiratory distress, should be immediately notified which is likely to be a complication of H1N1 flu 7)The mortality is less than .01 percent of those affected, that means may be one in 10,000 affected is likely to suffer the life loss.

8) If you remember, 2 years ago SARS was blown out of proportion, what happened? Humans develop immunity to the virus, the same is going to happen, we develop immunity in due course of time, the virus is in the air, you can not stop it, our body is already developing the immunity so nothing to panic.

We need to take care of children and elderly who have less immunity and do not let them go to crowded places that are all.

WE MUST START THIS CAMPAIGN OF NOT  TO BE AFRAID OF THIS FLU AND LET YOUR DAILY WORK CONTINUE AS NORMAL, NO MASKS FOR ORDINARY CITIZENS, HEALTH CARE WORKERS OR SPECIFIC EXPOSED TO LOT OF CROWDED ENVIRONMENTS MAY BE BENEFITTED, NOT PROVEN.

I am amazed to hear that people are selling masks of RS 20 each which are available to less than Rupee 1 in the market.

See who is getting benefitted?

Please spread the scientific info, do not join the band wagon and stick to science, that should be the order of the day.

Even worst should not be the end of hope

There was a rich man, once he went to roam around in see in his provate boat. Enjoying the see he went bit far, and suddenly there starts storm in sea. Not seeing any possibility of storm to vanish, he jumped to sea wearing his life jacket. After he jumped his boat sanced but he swim and reached to a nearest island.

There was no one on that island and every side there was only see. He started to think that he hadn't done any bad to anyone in his entire life, then why he is suffering?. But the his own mind replied to him that almighty have saved him from the storm, he will only show him some way. Day by date time was fleeting away, he was eating fruits of the trees what ever available on that island. Gradualy he started to loose Faith in goad, he was thinking had bee god there, he whould have not been suffering like that.

He dont know till how long he has to stay there, he though let me create a small hut. Using tree woods and leaves he created a hut. He became very happy that finaly he will be able to sleep in hut and wont need to sleep under sky. Suddenly there came a lightening and his hut started to burn. He started to crying and cursing the god, that really there is no god,and god is very crual.

while He was crying because of frustration, a boat came to island and two men come from the boat to this fellow. Those men told him that we say some fire on island, and we thought there should be someone who needs help, and so we came. had there been no fire we would have never come to know about you.

Our man, started crying, Drops of tears started to flow from his eyes. He pledges to god that forgive me, you are indeed very kind. You have burnt my hut to save me.

When something bad happens to human, he became frustreted. Helan Caler had quoted once  wonderfully that " when god closed one dore of happiness, he opens many more otheres. But we are so tensed and frustred that we dont see other dore of happiness".

Sometime we feels everything is in our grasp, and sometime the lines of our own palm seems betraying. Only time can define himself. Wind never blows to a single direction, waterfall ever stops, sun never stops rising from west, then how come time be bad for all the time? Tough condition never sustain but tough men does. After the last moment of dark night there comes the first rays of pleasant light.

The Root Cause of Swine Flue

Ever wonder what could be the reason for swine flue?
Like say for an example AIDS, this comes from South african Apes, and we all know how could have this AIDS viruses transferred from apes to humans......

Same way Swine flue also have transferred from an animal to humans.... wondering how?
have a look at following pictures

The root cause for the Swine Flue

Bhuvan : ISRO's answer to Google Earth

Bhuvan : ISRO's answer to Google Earth : Bhuvan Vs Google Earth

In what appears to be a challenge to Google Earth and Wikimapia, the Space Applications Centre (SAC) of ISRO has come up with 'Bhuvan', bringing India's name into the limelight yet again. Bhuvan, which literally means 'earth', is a web-based tool like Google Earth, but it promises better 3-D satellite imagery of India than what is currently being offered by other Virtual Globe software. Moreover, it brings you a host of India-specific features such as weather information and even administrative boundaries of all states and districts.

Bhuvan is equally capable of offering images of the globe, but the best resolution area is India, at least for the time being. "Bhuvan will be able to give you an image from only 10 meters away", an ISRO spokesman said; which means in the Indian subcontinent even a commuter moving on the road can be easily spotted. Bhuvan uses images taken at least a year ago by ISRO's seven remote-sensing satellites in orbit including Cartosat-1 and Cartosat-2.

Unique features

1. Bhuvan allows users to access, explore and visualize 2D and 3D image data along with rich thematic information on soil, wasteland, water resources etc in the Indian subcontinent.

2. It displays multi-resolution, multi-sensor, multi-temporal image data.

3. Users can superpose administrative boundaries of choice on images as required.

4. It allows visualization of AWS (Automatic Weather Stations) data in a graphic view and use tabular weather data of user choice.

5. Fly to locations (Enables users to fly from the current location directly to the selected location)

6. It features a Heads-Up Display (HUD) navigation controls (Tilt slider, north indicator, opacity, compass ring, zoom slider)

7. Allows navigation using the 3D view Pop-up menu (Fly-in, Fly out, jump in, jump around, view point)

8. 3D Fly through (3D view to fly to locations, objects in the terrain, and navigate freely using the mouse or keyboard)

9. Drawing 2D objects (Text labels, polylines, polygons, rectangles, 2D arrows, circles, ellipse)

10. Drawing 3D Objects (placing of expressive 3D models, 3D polygons, boxes)

11. Snapshot creation (copies the 3D view to a floating window and allows saving to an external file)

12. Measurement tools (Horizontal distance, aerial distance, vertical distance, measure area)

13. Shadow Analysis (it sets the sun position based on the given time creating shadows and effects of the lighting on the terrain)

14. The Bhuvan portal is designed to run on slow Internet connections.

Bhuvan's edge over Google Earth

Google Earth Bhuvan
Zoom levels up to 200 mt Zoom levels up to 10 mt
Single layer information Multi-layer information
Images upgraded every 4 years Images upgraded every year
No alternate viewing options Options of viewing on different dates
Uses international satellites Uses Indian satellites

Thus, Bhuvan represents, in essence, the whole India on your computer. The next version of Bhuvan is expected to be called Bhuvan ChandraBhumi, which will feature both earth and moon in resolution up to 347 m maximum in near side and 432 m far side which is taken by Chandrayaan. The Bhuvan project demonstrates the country's expertise in both information and space technology.

The Bhuvan can be downloaded from http://bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in/.
